How to Size a Solar System in Nigeria: A Simple Planning Method

Learn the basic solar sizing workflow: appliance list, peak load, daily energy, backup hours, inverter, battery and solar array.

1. Step 1: list every intended load

Record appliance wattage, quantity and expected hours of use. Separate always-on loads from occasional heavy loads and note motor or compressor appliances.

2. Step 2: estimate maximum simultaneous load

Add the appliances that may operate together. This is a starting point for inverter sizing, with suitable headroom for starting demand and real operating conditions.

3. Step 3: estimate daily energy

Multiply appliance power by expected hours of use. Daily energy helps determine storage and solar generation requirements.

4. Step 4: choose the backup objective

Decide how many hours the critical loads should operate from stored energy when solar or grid supply is unavailable.

5. Step 5: size PV around energy and charging

The PV array must generate useful energy during available sunlight while staying inside the inverter or controller electrical limits. A site assessment confirms roof space, shade and cable routes.
